Weekly Diary (Podcast Project)

Week 0

Mr Nick gave us an overview about the podcast project and we listened to a few podcast examples in class. I also did my own research by listening to podcasts on Spotify.

Week 1

In our first class we created a group for our podcast project (Kanna, Kimi, Erina, Hugo) Firstly, our group discussed the main idea for our podcast (theme, audience) and we decided to make a true crime podcast for teenagers around our age. We also created a survey in google form that we will send to Grade 10-12. We also listened to the first 5 minutes of 2 different history podcast and evaluate who's their target audience (Demographics/Psychographics).

We made several questions to help us get a better understanding of our target market such as:

1. Grade

2. Gender

3. How often do you listen to podcast/radio?

4. Do you watch/listen to crime medias? If yes, what is your favorite show/podcast?

5. Do you like modern or old crime cases?

6. Do you like narrator based or narrative based?

7. Do you prefer light or heavy crime cases?

8. Out of 1-5 how graphic are the media you watch/listen to?

9. Do you prefer fictional crime or true crime?

10. Which one do you prefer?

11. Do you like episodic or continuing stories?

12. What's your favorite crime case? (if you have one)

I shared the link to the class group chats of the Regents high school students, however, the amount of 10 and 11 graders that has filled in our survey are much lower than the 12 graders, so me and my teammate Kimi decided to go around the school to gather more participants. We successfully gathered more than 15 more responses.

Week 2

Today we did an outline of our podcast. First, we listened to 2 different podcast, The always sunny podcast and 5 minutes history (the history of chocolate). We took notes of the timeline, format, topics , speakers and sound effects. Then, we decided the initial plan of the podcast with the help of the results of our podcasts. We decided to a name for a podcast, "Unsolved International."

We also made a collaborative google docs where we wrote down all of our initial plans. We decided on the topics for our 2 podcast episodes, the case of The Black Dahlia and Jack the Ripper.

We attempted to make a jingle and recorded an intro using GarageBand.

Week 3

This week we listened to podcasts intro in the middle of the class. Our group started to research on the 2 crime cases, The Black Dahlia and Jack the Ripper. We started to write our script. Starting from the disclaimer and intro. We compiled the idea of the things we want to include in our podcast and we turn those ideas to a script form.

We also experimented with a music program, Garage Band, both laptop and iPad version. We created a jingle and Erina recorded our intro.

Week 4

This week, Me and Kimi did a research on Jack the Ripper case while Hugo and Erin did a research on The Black Dahlia. After gathering the informations Erin wrote a script for both of the episodes. Mr Wayan introduced us to the hardwares that are commonly used to make podcast (mic, audio interface, etc). We finished up the script for The Black Dahlia. We did a survey in our canteen to write an advertisement script. We chose a canteen stall to advertise and wrote a script for the advertisement.

Week 5

This week my team did a trial recording session for our first episode however I couldn't attend the meeting that day. Due the bad quality of the school's recording hardwares we decided to record our podcast with Erin and Hugo's mic. I did a research for our podcast cover art and sketched a few ideas using the software Procreate. Mr Nick suggested us to change our podcast title to make it more interesting so we gathered our ideas and made a list of possible titles.

Week 6

In this week, Erin finished the recording for both of the episodes with the help of her friend and Hugo recorded the advertisement and intro. Kimi started the editing for both episodes. Kimi sent us drafts of the edited recording and we gave recommendations and feedbacks on the editing.

I made an Instagram account for our podcast (@unsolved_regents) after we decided on the podcast title which is "Unsolved." I also started to research and make the cover art of our podcast using Photoshop. I sent my cover art draft to Kimi for feedbacks and we discussed on what elements to add before finalizing the cover art.

Week 7

After finalizing our thumbnail, I started my research on other podcasts' instagram account. After discussing with my teammates we decided on making a real instagram account rather than editing a fake one. I created a business instagram account. I used the website canva.com to design instagram posts and used photoshop to create Instagram stories. I also make use of many instagram features such as polls and q&a box to create interactivity between us and our followers.

Week 8

After Kimi finished editing on both of the episodes I had an idea of posting previews of each episode in our Instagram. I made a design for a post using canva.com and I sent it to Kimi and asked her to combine my design and a small part of the podcast using Adobe Premier pro. She sent the video back to me and I uploaded the post.

Kimi also had an idea of making a merchandise to boost our brand loyalty. She created a t-shirt mockup with the logo I made with this website, https://mockupmark.com/template/white-crew-neck-t-shirt-hanger-white-background-16225. I then created advertisements of the merchandise through instagram post and stories. I designed the posts with both canva.com and adobe photoshop.

After getting feedback to Mr Nick I adjusted my thumbnail according to his suggestion but after a discussion with my teammates we concluded that the previous design was better. Me and Kimi also asked one of our friend, Arvin to act out the Charles Cross character and record some of his reactions. He sent us several voice clips. We chose one of them and Kimi edited the clip into the episode.

I also wrote my critical reflection and presented it in an in interactive presentation with prezi.com.
